Libre Graphics Meeting 2013: Day 3

#LGM13 day 3

Fonts, fonts, fonts, open hardware and education.

Storified by Juego· Sat, Apr 13 2013 01:33:48

The day started with the Oswald font creator, Vernon Adams, talking about libre fonts and the opportunities it creates for font designers, quoting Johanna Blakley’s “virtues of copying in fashion design”.

Booksprint was the subject of the next two talks. One for creating a Fontforge user manual in 3 days. The other one to create a libre fonts specimen book in 5 days by Manuel Schmalstieg.

Alexei Vanyashin, font designer and teacher, is here to talk about Cyreal type foundry. One of his work was to design the (in-) famous Lobster Cyrillic glyphs.

Raphael Bastide then talked about his Unified Type Design project that would possibly improve libre font discovering, documentation, sharing and spreading.

Even after Werner Lemberg talk about ttfautohint, font hinting retains a lot of its mystery to me. But I would surely use his software if I ever design a font, because it surely does the job, especially for people who don’t understand hinting like me.

Nina Paley rocks the stage with “The land is mine” and asks tough questions on how to do vector animation with free software. Especially because her next movie will be illegal.

After a quick bocadillo, I’ve attended with more than 30 people a 2 hour gathering organized by Aymeric Mansoux called “Towards a network of free culture aware educators in art and design education“. Lots of ideas and experiences about F/LOSS in education have been shared. Like Aymeric said, this meeting was just a “hand shake” and more things should come out of this.
After quickly presenting the uHbench, open source hardware public bench, I was pleased with the the comments received about it.

Daniil Vasiliev followed with a presentation of Hotglue and it’s successor, Superglue and its little home (owned) static data server.

Getting closer to the end of the day, it gets harder to concentrate. Too many of them in one day kills my attention. I still saw “This is not a pipe” and “Laidout”, which showed interesting concepts in a state of work-in-progress. I then just came back in the Auditorio to see François’s presentation at the end.

Not much tweets or picture to share the end of this long friday. I guess everyone was tired. The performance that closed Medialab Prado was called “Piksels and lines orchestra“. They run modified versions of graphic software that produce music when you manipulate them. It seemed to me this is close to live coding, although, it uses the graphic designers palette instead of the programmer’s palette.

After that, everyone rushed to a disco bar nearby called “Mama was a groupie” (if I translate it right), where the Gimp community was pouring free beer to everyone. I think it’s the first time I get offered a beer by an open source software. Interesting concept. Well, this kicked the “future party” up. People danced until the end of the night.

This is also the reason why this post is published with a bit of delay. And I’m already late for the conferences of the last day.

Libre Graphics Meeting 2013: day 2

#LGM13 Day 2

Second day of Libre Graphics Meeting 2013 at Medialab Prado

Following yesterday’s report, this is still a personal point of view of the event (with the help of others through social media)
#LGM13 Day2. Interactivos’?13 Projects Presentation // Dia2. Preseantación de Proyectos de Interactivos’?13.Jennifer Dopazo
Morning presentations are about Interactivos?13 open workshop that will start on monday, right after the LGM. The Interactivos? serie has been started by Medialab Prado in 2006 and is focusing on collaborative prototyping. 9 projects have been selected this year.
First project to be presented is the “Freedom of Speech Project“.

I’m amazed how much every spanish project or presentation proposed at LGM is talking about “crisis”, “street protest”, “resistance” or “public voice” in a broad sense and is in a real urge to come with “new tools” to build upon this “renewed citizenship”.

Second presentation, was my proposition “Design with Git“.

I’m delighted it has been selected for Interactivos?13. And here’s an encouraging comment I received (with many other verbal ones).
#Git for designers? Yes, please! //¿Git para diseñadores? Si, por favor! . Streaming streaming.medialab-prado.esJennifer Dopazo
So many great projects have been presented and I’ll be happy to watch them grow for the next two weeks but “Makea Tu Vida” really got my attention. It looks like a great initiative to encourage the creation and sharing of open source product designs. Really intrigued by what they will come up with and I think you should check them too.

The afternoon started with interesting lightning talks around scribus improvements and OSP new tools in the making.
The rest of the  afternoon was spent hoping in and out of the auditorium, mostly chatting outside in the sun with the wonderful people attending LGM, of course talking about creation and free culture. An amazing crowd that is.

The journey ended with the talk “Internet and parasites”. Deep and tough stuff to close the day.

Chris Kelty is talking about the possibilities of F/LOSS as parasite (in a good way!) at . Damn fine stuff.ginger coons
See you tomorrow.

Libre Graphics Meeting 2013: Day 1

#LGM13 Day 1

Libre Graphics Meeting 2013 opens at Medialab Prado, Madrid.

Edité par Juego· Wed, Apr 10 2013 16:04:11

During 4 days, starting this 10 April 2013, the Libre Graphics Meeting will gather around 300 people to speak, share, work and exchange ideas around free culture and the (future) tools that make it happend. As a participant, speaker and open source furniture creator, here’s a personal point of view of the event.
@melindasipos: Opening talk by Femke Snelting, Laura Fernandez and @marcosgcm Sipos
Great introduction talk by Femke, Laura and Marcos with a room packed with people. It’s at this point of time that I realize how much work these three persons and their teams have put to make something like this happend. And suddenly, the open source hardware furniture in the cafeteria makes so much sense.

The first talk is about the media facade of the Medialab Prado and the web app that has been put together by to push interactive animations on it. The application uses Processingjs for the creative coding side and encourage designers from all over the world to submit their work to be displayed during the 4 days. Of course, this will raise the question of what is allowed to be displayed on a public building at a size of 15m wide.

Another talk that I found inspiring is about Pycessing, by Brendan Howell. Pycessing is a very young Processing-like IDE written in Python. It’s been used by only a few people and Brendan uses it to teach coding but it’s spreading the love for Python in a Processing way. Which is just cool. Brendan has got me tempted.

I was also impressed by the last talk of the day about Fontforge and the dedication, improvement and energy Ben Martin puts into it. Definitly a project to watch closely in the next months. And obviously, I was not the only one impressed by it.
